Kyos

Channel the world's living energy into fire, flood, stone, and light.

Kyos

Kyos are the elemental, spell-like Arts that form one of the two core pillars of combat in Tales of Arise. Where Strike Arts represent a character's physical, melee-based attacks, Kyos channel the world's deeper energies into devastating ranged or area effects—erupting flames, summoning torrents, splitting the earth, or unleashing radiant light. Every playable character carries a personal arsenal of Kyos unique to their element and fighting style, making them as much a character-defining trait as their weapon of choice.

In the broader world of Dahna, Kyos are not merely a combat mechanic; they are the visible expression of a fundamental force woven into the land itself. Their use, mastery, and the political tensions surrounding them ripple through the story, tying the four protagonists' struggle to the very fabric of the world they fight to protect.

Lore & Background

In the world of Dahna, the force behind Kyos is as old as the continents themselves. The two great landmasses—Renne, with its towering cities and rigid social hierarchies, and Caelis, where the people live closer to the raw pulse of the land—both draw upon this energy, yet they understand and harness it in profoundly different ways. For the people of Renne, Kyos are a controlled, regulated resource; for the Caelians, they are an inherited birthright, something felt in the blood and the soil beneath one's feet.

The four protagonists, all from Caelis, each carry a Kyos affinity that mirrors their personality and role within the party. Alphen's connection to the force is singular and deeply personal, tied to his own identity and the mystery of his origins. Lahra, Dionne, and Monarca each express their Kyos through distinct elemental expressions, and the way they combine their abilities in combat reflects the trust and chemistry they build over the course of the story.

The political and spiritual weight of Kyos extends beyond the battlefield. Factions in Renne view unregulated Kyos use with suspicion, while in Caelis the ability is woven into culture, ritual, and daily life. This tension—between control and freedom, between the individual's right to their power and the state's desire to contain it—threads through the narrative and gives the combat system a narrative gravity that goes well beyond 'press a button for a big explosion.'

In Their Own Story

The wind off the Caelian coast tasted of salt and iron. Lahra crouched behind a shattered pillar, her fingers tracing the scorch marks she'd left on the stone seconds earlier. Across the plaza, three Renne enforcers advanced in a tight wedge, their armor gleaming under the low sun.

She exhaled. Felt the heat gather behind her sternum, coiling like a living thing.

"Kyos," she whispered—not a word of power, just a name. A reminder that the fire was hers, had always been hers, and no edict from a distant capital could take it.

She snapped her palm forward. The air between them split open in a sheet of orange-white flame, and the enforcers' formation broke like glass. Behind her, Dionne was already weaving a counter-current of water to cool the stone, Monarca's hands pressed flat to the ground, raising a wall of compacted earth to shield them all. And Alphen—Alphen stood at the center, quiet, his own light humming just beneath the surface of his skin, waiting for the moment that would demand it.

The plaza was quiet again. Lahra flexed her singed fingers and smiled.

Reader's Guide

Kyos are the 'spell' half of your Arts loadout. Unlike Strike Arts, which are physical and close-range, Kyos are typically ranged or area-of-effect attacks that deal elemental damage and often hit multiple enemies at once. They consume SP, so managing your SP pool is as important as managing HP.

All four playable characters—Alphen, Lahra, Dionne, and Monarca—have their own unique Kyos tied to their personal element. In-story, this reflects each character's innate connection to the world's energy: Lahra's fire, Dionne's water, Monarca's earth, and Alphen's singular, identity-bound light. You unlock and upgrade Kyos as each character levels up and progresses through their personal story arcs.

Kyos can be customized in the Arts menu, letting you adjust properties like damage, range, or hit count. This is where build optimization lives: slotting a Kyos that complements your Strike Arts combo flow, or choosing a wide-area Kyos to clear crowds before chaining into a Mighty Strike, makes a huge difference in both story encounters and the harder endgame content.

Build tip: Prioritize unlocking the Kyos that best match your preferred element first, then use the customization slots to extend range or add multi-hit properties. Pairing a single-target burst Kyos with a wide Strike Art combo gives you the best single-enemy DPS, while a multi-hit area Kyos followed by a charged Mighty Strike shreds groups. Watch your SP gauge—two or three Kyos in a row will drain you, so weave in Strike Arts to let SP recover between casts.
