Burst

Fill the gauge, unleash the storm—four heroes, one devastating crescendo.

Burst

Burst is the signature ultimate-attack layer of Tales of Arise's real-time combat system. Rather than being a single spell or button, it is a gauge-driven sequence that rewards sustained engagement: as you trade hits with enemies, a shared Burst Gauge gradually fills, and once it overflows you unlock a dramatic, cinematic payoff that can swing the tide of a fight in a single breath.

Burst sits above the regular Arts (elemental strikes) and the character-specific skill sets, functioning as the combat's emotional and mechanical climax. It comes in three escalating tiers—Solo, Linked, and Full—each adding more party members to the spectacle and multiplying the damage output, making it the moment players have been building toward since the first enemy encounter.

Lore & Background

In the fractured world of Tales of Arise, combat is as much about rhythm and partnership as it is about raw power. The Burst system reflects the narrative's central theme: no single individual can topple the oppressive regime of Caelum alone. Alphen's blade, Dohalim's searing flame, Kyuuketsuki's radiant light, and Shionne's shadowy might each carry their own weight, but it is the act of binding those forces together—first in pairs, then as a unified front—that mirrors the story's arc from scattered refugees to a cohesive resistance.

Mechanically, the Burst Gauge acts as a shared reservoir of combat momentum. Every swing, every elemental Arts strike, even the damage the party absorbs while defending, feeds into it. This design encourages players to stay in the flow of battle rather than disengaging, turning each encounter into a short narrative of escalation: trade blows, build pressure, and then release. The three tiers reward different playstyles. A Solo Burst is quick and targeted, ideal for finishing a single tough foe. A Linked Burst lets two characters weave their abilities into a combined strike, which is where elemental synergies shine. A Full Burst is the grand finale, a four-part cinematic sequence that can clear a screen of enemies or shatter a boss's guard.

Each character's personal Burst animation is a short, choreographed set-piece that showcases their identity and elemental affinity. Watching all four play out back-to-back during a Full Burst is one of the most celebrated moments in the game's combat, a reward that feels earned after minutes of careful positioning and combo-building.

In Their Own Story

The cavern behind the Dahnan settlement hummed with the residual heat of the fight. Alphen's sword was notched, Dohalim's fingers still smoldering, and Shionne leaned against a pillar, breathing hard. The Caelum patrol squad—six armored soldiers and their captain—stood between them and the escape tunnel.

"Gauge's full," Kyuuketsuki said quietly, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. He did not need to look at the others. They all felt it, that coiled tension in the air, the moment the world holds its breath.

Alphen nodded. "Together."

The captain raised his halberd and charged. What followed was not a fight. It was a single, thundering exhalation—four figures moving as one, light and shadow and flame and steel braiding into a storm that left the cavern silent and the patrol scattered. The tunnel yawned ahead, dark and waiting. They walked through without looking back.

Reader's Guide

The Burst Gauge is a shared meter that fills as your party deals damage, takes hits, and lands Arts. Once it is full, you can trigger a Burst by pressing the dedicated input. You then choose which tier to use: Solo (one character), Linked (two), or Full (all four). Each character performs a unique, cinematic attack sequence, and the damage scales with the number of participants.

All four main characters—Alphen, Dohalim, Kyuuketsuki, and Shionne—have their own Burst animations. In-story, this reflects their distinct elemental affinities and combat philosophies: Alphen's is a swift sword flourish, Dohalim's a concentrated burst of flame, Kyuuketsuki's a radiant wave of light, and Shionne's a shadowy, earth-shaking release. The narrative justification is that their wills and abilities, forged through shared struggle, allow them to channel their power in a single coordinated outpouring.

Build tip: Because the Burst Gauge is shared, you want to keep all four characters active in combat to fill it faster. Prioritize characters with high-damage Arts or combo multipliers to pump the gauge quickly. When you do trigger a Burst, consider the enemy setup: a Solo Burst is efficient for a single high-HP target, while a Full Burst is best saved for boss fights or screens packed with enemies where the wide-area damage and guard-break effects will have the most impact. Pairing a Linked Burst with two characters of complementary elements can also set up follow-up combos more effectively than a solo option.
